First big 31miler today!

Okay, probably a long winded post tonight.

Left  out of Walterboro around 7:00 am this morning. All roads I travelled today were one lane roads (one lane each way that is). There was not a lot of room to get over in most cases, but the people were much nicer about it today. And again I must say the big rigs were the best about giving me room and beeping in support.

I had my first dog encounter today.  I was walking minding my own business (believe it ot not) when out of know where comes this big old shepard mix sporting a red bandanna and barking like, that's right I'm cool, and get out of my space. He stopped at the road and just barked. I can handle that. After about another ten miles I had a pit bull run out in the road after me. A young boy and girl maybe ages 10 & 11 came after the dog apologising for the dog chasing me. I told them it was okay. Just had to watch because there was a lot traffic at the time. I told the boy I was walking coast to coast for mental health and suicide awareness.  He looked up at me silent for a moment, then reached out his hand to shake and asked if he could get me water or something. I told him no, that was okay because Hampton was just up the road. I gave him and his sister a card, I think they enjoyed that.

Oh yeah, after going from Sullivan's Island. And walking around 80 miles at that time, I had two guys stop and give me my first bottle of water. Thank you gentleman, you were the first to offer me water while on the road. It was very much appreciated.

I also had a lady with kids in the car and traffic coming up behind her stop to give me money which I used for dinner. Thank you ma'am! I also had another woman stop and give me some cash that I used for much needed drinks. God bless all of you who have helped me out today making it possible for me to do this walk for mental health and suicide awareness. What a blessing to be able to get walking again during the National Suicide Prevention Week.

I got into Hampton, S.C. around 4:45, checked into the closest motel and right next to the Post office, where I have to go in the morning to pick up a package my sister Grace sent me with rubber boots for those rainy days. And a new sign for the jogging stroller.  I just have to find time to put it together.

Now for the big story.

First time I had to use the pepper spray!

As I was walking along the roadside, through the swampy thicket, I could see the tops of some of the smaller trees bending downward as if something big was pushing them out of the way. It was coming ever so closer, when bam...out of the thicket and much to my surprise..it was none other the Infamous Lizard  man making a dash towards me. I pulled out my pepper spray, made the biggest  cloud of that eye stinging skin burning mist and made a mad dash down the road to safety.

Now that story may or may not have been true, I will leave that up to my viewing audience to decide.

Some pics from today!

  1. Hello it's me again Margaret! If you were in NJ I would have to say it was the Jersey devil, but oh well, be that as it may. Glad you made that very long walk all in one day after having the swollen leg and all. Sounds like it was a pretty good day. I think I can, I think I can!

  3. I think the sign really helps! If you are going to do another walk at another time, I would start out with a sign!! Love reading the blog and have told several people in daily conversation about your walk. Would be easier to plug you with a business card or something with your website on it! Keep safe! Much love!
