I have to break my blog down to several smaller blogs. For some reason I couldn't publish last nights blog..so I am trying to see if it helps to shorten them.
Maybe to many pictures...I don't know.
Okay..I left Vicksburg at 7:00 am and missed my turn somehow...yes again. I still got to the Old Vickburg Bridge where I wanted to be..just 4 miles added to the walk. God wanted me to have a warm up first I guess...lol!
So I ended up walking through the historic part of down town. I took some pictures along the way of course...but had to hurry. I was having a tour of the old bridge which happened to start at the Vicksburg side with the tour ending on the Louisiana side in Delta.
My guide was Warren who also happened to be one of the maintenance men who worked on the bridge. It closed to traffic and pedestrians in 1998 I believe. As the cars being built got wider the bridge became to narrow for cars to go across safely. It is still used for the railway. About 5 trains a day cross there. There are only 3 crossings in Louisiana for trains. Vicksburg..up near Memphis..and down at Natchez. When the bridge opened in 1930, it made US route 80 the first coast to coast highway in the South.
They occasionally have events like a 5K run and bike races and sometimes do other tours. But it is basically closed to the public.
The bridge is around 1 3/4 miles long. It took a while to walk the tour. It was pretty cool and a train even came through while we were walking. They have a flag on top of the bridge they have to change out about every 4-5 month's due to the wind tears. I think Warren said the climb is about 130 something feet from the bridge and from the bridge to the Mississippi River it is about 128 feet or somewhere close to that.
When we got to the other side it was the end of my tour. I got a few shots of my guide Warren for the blog. Thank you Warren for the tour and all the information...God bless!
